Definition of a Bungalow

bungalow ( ) n. A small house or cottage usually having a single story and sometimes an additional attic story.

bungalow: a one-storied house with a low-pitched roof;  
also : a house having one and a half stories and usually a front porch 


I secretly always wanted to live in a bungalow.  I had several friends growing up who lived in a bungalow, and in most cases the upstairs consisted of a cool room that had low ceilings, and little nooks and crannies, a secret closets and all the fun stuff a girl with a good imagination thought was so very cool!  


But the truth of the matter is, most bungalow homes are very small.  In fact when hubby and I were looking at homes back in 2000, we went through a few bungalows and they were around 800-900 sq ft and often times that included the upstairs.  Yikes.  It didn't help that all the ones we went through were all crammed pack with stuff.  Totally not hubby nor my style!  Big turn-off!  Let's just say there were no stageing done in these homes.  Hey, it was 2000.  Times were good, and it probably wasn't necessary for a sale.  


Anyhow, needless to say, no bungalow for me.  Until now.  Hubby and I were back out on the market 10 years later.  And we didn't see many bungalows in our search.  Actually we saw one other before this one.  


However, THIS bungalow is spacious.  Upstairs and down.  It has a decent size kitchen that most bungalows lack.  (although the cupboard placement is such that I have less cupboards in a larger kitchen, but we'll save that rant for later!) 


So, once we placed our offer I started searching on the internet on how to decorate a bungalow.  I know I even searched midwest style bungalow.  The bungalows that came up in my search were not exactly like the kind of bungalow's we have in the midwest.  They aren't really anything like the above definitions.  They were more like this:  

 

Ok, I am not sure what YOU think, but um, NOT the kind of bungalow I am talking about.  I mean, I WISH.  But, NOT!  Just when I was starting to think that maybe us Michiganders just called our "bungalows" by the wrong name.  I did an internet search on the definition, and it sounds right to me.
